"hello, I hope I can get help

"hello, I hope I can get help here, I have good know how as far as automotive engines go, but I cant figure this one out. When I got the boat it had a automotive style HEI distributor i swapped it out for the correct one set the timing out of the water and runs good, but when we put it in the water it will not get above 3000 rpm in fwd, and every 2 to 3 min it will back fire and die. the new distributor dos not have a vacuum advance. so is the some thing i have to do for it to advance under load or maybe lean it out i have ran out of ideas and being new with marine engines in need help."

i for got to mention it is in

i for got to mention it is in a 24 ft bay liner it is a 225d 305 block with a q-jet carb also when eve it was is fwd the out drive drops and will not trim up when in gear

"I think it is time for a comp

"I think it is time for a comp test. You describe a symptom that is typical for a mushroom valve, loss of power and back-firing.
You probably have a drive lift and not a power trim. never lift the drive when engaged in forward. As emergency and low idle rpm, it may be used for 'beaching' but that is the limit."

"First, I would check the firi

"First, I would check the firing order and make sure that a couple of ignition wires have not been accidentally swapped when installing the new distributor.

For your information, marine distributors do not have vacuum advance: they just have mechanical advance. Make sure it is working (i.e. no broken springs or seized centrifugal weights)

Also, do you have power trim or just mechanical power tilt? If you have the latter, the mechanism is only to lift the outdrive, not to trim it under power (except, as Morten said, at very low RPM). If you try to trim it under power, you will likely ruin the lifting mechanism gears.

If yo are new to marine engines, consider purchasing a copy of the Seloc repair manual for your engine and outdrive. It will be money well spent."
