HELP! 1986 Suzuki DT4

I have a 1968 Suzuki DT4 that doesn't always spit water but air will be coming out of the hole where the water normally does. It also wants to die after i shift it into gear, and no matter if it just ran for awhile or hasn't ran at all you have to start it with the choke on. Any help is appreciated!!!

Have you serviced the water pump. Is the gas old and are you adding a gas conditioner?

gas is new and i am mixing it witg oil but that's it, i also took apart the water pump and inspected it and the impeller is still like new.

There is a seal in the waterpump housing that blocks exhaust gas getting into the waterpump.It is located in the top of the waterpump housing where the driveshaft goes through.Replace that and it should solve youre problem.As for your other problem just clean the carb.
