hello ,problem year 1972 johnson 65 hp i have no forward 'i got reverse and neutral only

When the motor is not running it should be in forward.-----------------It is spring loaded to go to forward.------------------Look for a problem ( dirt / metal particles ) in the bore of the shift piston.
 
i had it to the lake it was working fine that suddenly there was nothing no forward,i was toll it shouldnt start in gear ,only in neutral,,do i need to strip the motor to fix ? thanks
 
Have you check to see if it shifts into forward when the engine is off? If it will, check that power to the lower unit is being turned off when forward is selected, or disconnect the shift solenoids and see if it shifts into forward. The unit needs power to the solenoids in order to hold it in neutral and reverse. As stated, it might be a bad valve. (rare) IIRC, reverse was the weak part on those lower units. They'd strip the clutch dog and reverse gear.
At least you know the pump is working if it has a solid reverse.

Unless you have taken one of these units apart before, don't even think about taking it apart. It requires special tools to dis-and reassemble.

Is it in forward gearwhen the motor is stopped.----------------We need the answer to that simple question.-----------These units are in forward gear , when the motor makes about one turn with the starter it kicks into nuetral.
 
You need to take it apart ------When stopped the clutch dog is pushed into forward with a spring.----------It is not doing that !!--------My guess from many years of experience is that there is debris in the shift piston bore that is preventing the piston from being pushed into place by the spring.----It maybe tough to find a shop to repair that.--------With patience / good questions you can tackle this yourself.
