heat proublem ? 1982 40 hp

I am working on a 1982 40 hp merc . the intake manifold was cracked so i repaired it, clean every thing up put gas and power to it, vroom wright off the bat it started up . good strong flow through the tattel tail every thing seemed to be fine . untill i looked at the water stream and it was steaming . i shut down the moter asap . it was to hot to touch . I do believe something is wrong . to tell you the truth Im not sure were to go from here . any sugestions . oh it only took about 1.5 min for the steam to acure . its in a 55 gallon steel drum and i saw no exsaust bubbles from the drum of water it is in .

Blockage in the water channels up the block.Is there a thermostat? If there is pull it and put the hose on and see if the water is making it to the top.Saltwater by any chance?

there is no thermostat on this unit . i guess im going to remove the lower unit and check impeeler . thanks for your reply.
 
No exhaust??? Do you know how long it was sitting around before you started working on it? Could it be possible that some little critter decided that the exhaust channel in the housing looked like a nice place to build a nest?
 
been setting for yrs i flushed all the ports before hand just for that reason . i am scraching my head really hard for a solution . great thinking on your part .thanks for the reply .
 
Very strange. But if you say you get a nice water stream from the tattle tale then I doubt the impeller is the problem. It might not be in perfect condition, but at least there IS water coming out which means its working. Now I don't know for sure where the cooling channels go through the block, but is it possible that there's another crack you don't know about and it's actually exhaust coming out the water stream? Again, I'm not sure if that's even possible. Just throwing out an idea.
With that said, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to drop the lower unit and just take a look around for anything suspicious and change the impeller when you're down there.
 
I would like to thank everone who help me with this enigma . there was a small vacum line cuming from the power head that was cracked . replace it with some fuel line hose . what do you know good exsust good tattle tail with no more heat . its amazing what a small little hose will cure . Im not sure what the hose is for I just asumed some kind of vacum line , you know what that will get you . Asuming that is .
