Hello, can anyone tell me about the heat exchanger on a Volvo penta Aq131d? Are there any moving parts inside or just a resivoir for the coolant and water? Do they go bad?

No moving parts. The raw water circulates around the sweet water and transfers the heat away. Just consider it a radiator only water instead of air. It's an aluminum housing with a brass insert. I'm not sure on the 131 but on the older 125-145 the rubber o-ring in the bottom of the exchanger could go bad and the two coolants would mix and flow out the exhaust.

Joey, here's an exploded view of what should be your AQ131D heat exchanger.

As Kim says, it functions similarily to that of a car/truck radiator, but with seawater replacing the air as the heat removal media.
