Heat Exchanger Q?

Hi,
Looking at heat exchangers for my 318.
A lot of the web site's have "two Pass" heat exchangers as a direct replacement for my " single Pass" one? see attach.

Excluding the engine coolant in/out my exchanger (which is mounted on the starboard side of the motor) has a raw water inlet at the top and two outlets at the bottom. One goes to the gear box cooler and then to the risers, and the other to the manifolds.

The attached exchanger appears to have only one raw water outlet????? Any ideas . Does anyone have this style of exchanger and how is it plumbed? Any comments greatly appreciated.

If this is an older Chrysler I/B, the exhaust systems were rather complex compared to today's systems. The H/E's required more ports on them.
The double pass is good. No issues that I'd see with that alone, long as it fits your engine, and the plumbing can be made to accommodate.

From what I read, your mans are raw water cooled. Is it time for exhaust for you?
If so, this may be an oportunity to change to a different, less complicated exhaust system.
Some can be single fed, and then up and out via the risers.

Watch the "T" splitter fittings for single outlet H/E's. Some suppliers have had issues with the "split" not equally dividing the spent H/E sea water.
In tern, this caused one side of the exhaust to run warmer than the other. The cure, was/is to adjust the split, or replace it, and try again.

Can you post a few photos?

Thanks for the reply, the osco manifolds , risers were taken apart last service, about six months ago all in good shape, my mechanic said stick to the cast iron stuff then when I looked into a simpler stainless system. So yes cast iron manifolds and risers that are raw water cooled , with two inputs one at front of manifold other at riser after going through g/box cooler. I'll get some photos tonight.
Thanks Tony

Heres a pic from the top of the motor. The manifolds and risers are raw water cooled from the bottom of the heat exchanger from separate outlets. The riser's hose goes through the gearbox cooler first. If that makes sense.

Yeah, these are more complex than I think they need to be..... but that's how they did them back then.

I wonder if you'd be better off to ship your H/E up to Brad at SJE.... (San Juan Engineering), in the Seattle area.
The company can duplicate what you now have, making it much easier to replace.
Brad may even tell you that they do not need your unit. He may know exactly which one to build.
It's certainly worth the asking!

Thanks Rick,
Long way to Seattle for me. More looking at it from the point of buying a replacement on line ( I live in QLD Australia). The AUS dollar is pretty good for a change and it makes it worth buying stuff overseas. Most web sites promote the two pass type as a direct replacement for my "single pass" which I can still purchase for about the same price. Just wondering if any members had done this and how to plumb it. Thanks very much for your input.
