"My starboard 8.1MPI engine wi

"My starboard 8.1MPI engine with 300 hours has begun to run hotter than my port engine over the last few months. Last weekend cruisng at 3100 rpm it got to 190F while port engine was stable at 175F. I backed off and it reduced to 185F, but still higher than port. Once at anchor, I checked sea strainer, and raw water impeller, everything ok. I then removed both ends of stbd. engine heat exchanger, found no real debris, and used a coat hanger (all I had on board) to run through several cooling pipes. Put it all back together and on the way home, stbd. engine ran at 180F @ 3100 rpm, so a noticable decrease in heat, but still hotter that port engine. I would like to take off starboard heat exchanger and acid wash it and flush, my question is there anything to do in particular when removing it or re-installing the heat exchanger like having to bleed coolant, etc? Or does anyone have a "clean' way of doing this on board without filling the bilge with acid and water from runoff?

Thanks!"

Go to the Egg Harbor Owners Fo

Go to the Egg Harbor Owners Forum (don't have to be an owner to access) and there is a detailed process for cleaning using muriac acid. While I have not done this yet - it is affirmed by others.

"Is either engines cooling sys

"Is either engines cooling system hooked into your fresh water hot water tank? I am betting that the port engine is. It is typical that the engine that is connected to the hot water tank runs cooler than the one that isnt. Also what are your themostats rated at temp wise? 175 degrees? If so and your dash gauge is reading 180 degrees I do not think you have a problem, your gauge could easily be off 5 degrees."

"Thanks Scott. Yes port engin

"Thanks Scott. Yes port engine is plumbed to hot water tank, however, I cleaned out the starboard heat exchanger, flushed with M-acid and water, and now engine runs back to normal...problem solved!!!"
