Head Job

Hi guys,
I am enjoying my winter is Mexico but keeping a boat running is a pain when it comes to finding parts or outside services. Boat is a Pursuit 3000 with twin 350 Crusaders. Noticed last week that the starboard engine was not pulling its share. Compression check showed only 30 pounds in #4. I pulled the head Monday (6 hours), had the head rebuilt on Tuesday and put the engine back together today (another 6 hours). Glad I don't have to make a living at that slow work rate, but I am careful and try to avoid mistakes. Anyway, the only good news in all of this happened Tuesday.

The number 4 exhaust valve had the stem eroded to about half normal diameter and the valve had become slightly cocked and did not close tight. It was well on its way to separation which would have lunched the engine. So I avoided that bullet. But Mexico finally came though in the service department. Head was cleaned and a valve job done including four new exhaust valves, new seals and a facing. Total cost......$58. Wow! Of course it was another $40 for all the gaskets but still, that price reminded me of what it used to be like in the 60s.

I will splash it tomorrow and give it a run. Too bad the fishing is so poor right now.

Ayuh,.... So ya tore down the motor, 'n rebuild Only 1 of the heads,..??

If the exhaust valves are burnt, the motor is probably runnin' lean, causin' detonation,.....

I'd also suspect the other head is nearly as bad,...

Bondo is correct that if you do one (of anything) on a boat you should do both. But the elbow gaskets are not available in Mexico and I only had two of them, enough for one side. Also I did put a new head on the other side two years ago after an overheating incident and since it was erosion (salt?) not burning, the other side is likely fine for now.

John, I am glad that you are back up and running!

Important suggestions (otherwise known as "rules" :D ):

When owning a boat while out of the USA or while in Mexico, have plenty of new spare parts on hand!

Never pull only one V-8 cylinder head for work/repair!

When replacing one or both cylinder heads, make certain that the exact same casting number goes back on!

Always use the 8 stop procedure when adjusting cam follower plunger depth!
