Needed to put a new head on my 1964 9.5 evinrude due to a stripped spark plug hole but now when i used yhe recommended head bolt torque of 90 -120 I broke 2 boltss and stripprd aanother. Is the shop manuel wrong or the bolts just old?

Re: head bolts

Without looking it up, I bet that the spec is 90-120 inch-pounds. Not foot pounds.
Is that what you did?
No way those heads are torqued to 90 foot-lbs...my humble humble opinion.

Re: head bolts

I also suspect that you are confusing inch pounds with foot pounds.

A manual stating 90 to 120 pounds of torque would have to be inch pounds.

90" lbs = 7-1/2' lbs
120" lbs = 10' lbs

Re: head bolts

a big block chevy head is torqured to 110-130.lol

it was very likly in inch pounds.

id be investing in a hole new set of blots after streaching them to 90ft/pounds

Re: head bolts

Tap out the stripped hole with 8mm x 1.25 tap (6.80mm drill bit) and slap an 8mm bolt in the hole. Then torque with an INCH POUND torque wrench. You'll be good to go. I've drilled and tapped many of them.
