Head bolt fallen out of motor

"Hello,

On to the next 90 hp johnson issue. In my inspection of the motor I saw that one of the bolts had fallenout. It is located ( looking form back of motor) on the bottom left of the head. About 1 1/2 to 2 inches long. Can I just thread this back in or does it need any sealant of any kind.

Could there be any ramafications to this falling out before I owned it?"

"That's a first, never heard of a head bolt simply falling out. For reference, the shank of the bolt should be 2-1/4" long.... any shorter, it's broke.

If the bolt is intact, I'd suspect that the threads are stripped, however you have nothing to lose by threading it back in and attempting to tighten it. No sealant is needed, simply coat it with a little grease.

The head bolt torque would be 18 to 20 foot pounds. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

I just went down and looked at

I just went down and looked at it again........it's not actually a head bolt it's on the centre left of crankcase cover?? I think has a little bit of oily residue on it.

Tried to thread it in but socket touches sides before I can finish tightening......is it a secial tool?

If you are standing behind the motor ... the cover that is between both heads....is flat with perimeter bolts ( opposite end of motor from carbs) One of the lower left bolts was just sitting in bottom of engine cover."

"That's the exhaust baffle plate assembly consisting of a inner and a outer plate.

Red hot exhaust exists between the enginne and the inner plate. Water exists between the inner and outer cover, needed to cool that area obviously.

Loose or missing bolts could allow water to seep into the the exhaust area, then thru the exhaust ports into the cylinders.

From time to time, I have seen one of those bolts come loose and even fall out as you mention.

If that bolt will not tighten, locate a bolt that is approximately 1/8" or 1/4" longer and see if that will tighten securely. Hopefully you'll be successful as the alternative would be a real pain...... remove powerhead, remove plates, install heli coil, etc.
