Has anyone ever had an impellor split.?

Hello All,

I had an overheat alarm.
When I removed the impellor it had split and had jumped the keyway
The inside of the impellor is scored from the shaft freewheeling.
Installed about 18 months ago with about 12 hours of usage.
Rubber is still flexible, very little wear on the tips of the vanes.
Woodroffe key is located correctly.
How did this happen?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies,
Factory part, as part of a full waterpump kit. (2011, 60hp two stroke, runs like a champion)
Plastic hub, chewed out where the woodroffe key has been spinning, for a very short period of time.
Gold Coast, Australia, no freezing her mate!
No junk in the passages, inlet screen is about 2.5mm max.

I have replaced the part and test run on the hose, no water test yet.
I just don't want to recur.

Random unexplained failures have been happening since failures were invented.

No rhyme or reason why. It just is.

As I asked before, is this impeller made of plastic only, or does it havea Bronze hub? I have never seen an impeller split this way but I have seen vanes break off many times.

BTW- the Woodruff key shouldn't spin and the impeller should never grab the housing enough to tear the vanes or cause the core to crack- it may have a problem from spinning without lubrication, though. FWIW, no petroleum based product should be used to lubricate rubber- Volvo-Penta impellers ship with a small packet of Glycerine in the box because there's no reaction and it washes out after the water passes through.

For anyone who uses Glycerine frequently, it's available at Rockler woodworking supply stores in a bottle and it's not expensive.

Hello Jimn,
thanks for the reply.
Hub is plastic and I can see where the key has turned the sharp edge into a chamfer when the impellor jumped the key.
Vanes are like new.
I suspect that half the rubber impellors in Australia are allowed to run longer than 18 months between replacement.

The impellor was lubed with some grease when installed, just for startup.
I would expect that normal running would rinse the grease out in a few minutes.

BTW, what is all that "Funky Time" rubbish at the end of the post????
I didn't type or load that twaddle.
