hard to start

I have a j30ecub motor I have just replaced all the fuel lines fuel pump and rebuilt the Carb. I have been having problems with the motor not wanting to start after I have gone to my first fishing spot and trying to go to the next one. Could the electric primer be going bad or does anyone have any suggestions the Carb has plenty of fuel

Thanks the Carb has just been rebuilt and when I try to start it I wasn't using the choke as I said the fuel pump is new the fuel lines are new and the tank fuel line is new it acts like it doesn't have any fuel after it sets I'm not sure I will have to check thanks again any more suggestions

Let's just for kicks, assume you are correct in your "no fuel" theory. If that were true, simply going through the original start-up procedure would get fuel to the engine. (Squeeze the bulb, operate the primer, etc, etc.). But that more than likely is not the problem. More likely would be the too much fuel (flooded) theory as already suggested. Next time you are out, try disconnecting the fuel hose when you make a stop. That will prevent any unwanted fuel flow while it is stopped. If that works, then zero in on whatever is leaking and passing fuel.

This is an electric start motor so you do not " pump " the primer.----------------The key must be pushed in while cranking the motor over.--That opens the electric primer and it injects fuel straight into the engine.

Exactly how did you adjust the slow speed needle? Can you pump the primer until it completely stops flowing?
OK when I adjusted the slow speed needle I turned it one and a quarter turns from all the way in and the numbers on the power pack are 582281 cd2 and 20ky-oa. And you may right on the money I may not have the float right but this is the reason that I put new fuel lines and fuel pump and rebuilt the carb. So what ya think? Thanks again for your input on this

Regardless of what is the cause of your problem, you should always start with troubleshooting basics........

Remove the spark plugs and check the compression. What are the psi readings of all cylinders?

With the plugs still removed, check to see if the spark jumps a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame. Does it?

Describe your starting procedure in detail.

While watching the carburetor throat, pump the fuel primer bulb up hard to make sure the fuel isn't flowing out of the carburetor (flooding).

(Carburetor Float Setting)
(J. Reeves)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

-----------------------
(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Recommended spark plugs are Champion QL77JC4 plugs gaped at .030 .

Let us know what you find.

I once had a difficult to find intermittent starting problem similar to yours. Turns out I had a bad upper crankcase seal and after running awhile, it would deposit an oily goo on the electronics under the flywheel. If I stopped and then attempted to restart, it would not fire. After sitting for a long time, the goo would clear and it would eventually start. This is a long shot, but something to think about...are you getting a spark when it won't start?

Thanks for the help I took the boat out last night and after resetting the Carb it done the same thing so this morning I too the Carb off and readjusted the float like your instructions said reinstalled Carb and followed your steps once again seems to be doi just fine will find out next week when I go fishing again. Thanks for your help.
