"I have a 74 trojan f32 with lm318b's elect ign. The starb. engine is no prob. The port engine is hard to start cold. Crank sputters crank sputters, this goes on for several iterations with a minute or two in between sputters. This starting sometimes takes up to 10 minutes. The throttle is closed(only spot to get it to fire). Eventually it starts. When hot no problem starting or rpm's. I usually start it early in the morning before people show to go out then if within 4 hrs the engine starts ok. any ideas? timing is ok."

"To start the 318 pump the throttle to max and back three times, then crank at a just slightly advanced throttle.
A while back my 318 was over chokeing the engine. the only way I could start it was to reach down and open the choke plate and crank.
Your problem sounds to me like your accelerator pump is malfunctioning. A carb rebuild kit costs less than 50 and takes about 2 1/2 hours.
Good luck"

"Check the choke position after sitting overnight. THe choke should be closed, with a tiny bit of spring pressure holding it closed. Then open the choke by hand and pump the gas a few times to see if the accelerator pump is working.
