Hard to Start 2006 2 hp BF2

I just purchased a used 2006 BF2 that was used as an auxilary on a sailboat. When the seller and I started it before consumating the deal it took about six or seven tries to get the engine started but it did start up and seemed to run fine thereafter.

Since I wanted to burnoff any gas in the carb, I started it last night but it probably took about 15 pulls before it started with the choke in various positions. The engine has less than 20 hours on it.

Should this engine start in 2-3 pulls and what would you suggest before I bring it in for a tuneup?

Thanks

Re: Hard to Start BF2

These small 4 strokes suffer from fuel sitting in the carburetor for extended periods.---------------It should start in 1 or 2 pulls -------------The jets and passage ways are very small and plug easily from todays junk fuel.------------------Do yourself a favour and learn how to clean these simple carburetors.---------Always run fuel out of the carburetor when done boating !

Racerone, thanks for your input and I am not surprised by the answer. Can a layperson clean the carb and what source can you suggest to educate me on this process?

Thanks

Cleaning a carburetor is not hard to do --------------Use a digital camera to track your work.

Re: Hard to Start BF2

I found that the spark plug is worth changing every year, have you tried a new one?

The carb is prone to collecting muck in the float chamber. You can unscrew the drain plug using the hex section under it, and then the float chamber drops off. If you fancy unscrewing the drain screw wing nut at the base of the float chamber watch out for the ting O ring that can be easily damaged when you re-insert the same.

I'm fed up with the corrosion on that drain screw assembly and intend to replace the whole thing with a bolt this year.

If you want to do more you'll have to remove the carb. An easy job if you know what to remove. I got a manual on CD off ebay.
