Hard Starting and stalling 50hp Johnson

I have a 50hp Johnson out board Model # J50VLSIG, which no one can even find this model # for parts?
It has always been hard to start, you would have to full throttle it and choke the heck out of it to get it to run. Would often kill when put in gear. One it warmed up it ran good. But then when you stopped to fish it would start up ok, but when you put in gear it would kill and acted like it was flooded and you would have to wait 1/2 hour before it would restart.
Went to start it this season and it would not start, pumped gas ball and gas will be in fuel filter but once it start no more gas goes in the filter and it kills.
Any thought, thanks.

?/-------2001 model easy to find.------------Start with a compression test on this motor.--------No such thing as a motor " in good condition " that would be hard to start.
