Please give me advice, I bought ~1992 Mercury 60 SeaPro.

He was working last summer and this is what i dont like/is my concern:

1) he smoke more than other 40-50-60 hp mercury from same years. Most ppl say its normally, but i dont think so. it is white smoke, mostly when i turn it on, but it also smoke more than others in idle or in gear.

2) bigger problem is that i have trouble with turning him on when he is cold (specially first time in day). He does turn on, but i have to start it for more than few seconds + i push key (chock?)- nothing is better, then i give him, how is it said (sorry for my English), more neutral speed (gas?), then after some time he does turn on. He works for 5-10 seconds and dies.
Then I have to pump him again gas, and he turn on almost normally.

Besides that, during the day (after first time in a day) he start pretty normal (sometimes he gives me pain in ass, but i would say 85% times he turn on from first without problem)

3) How is proper starting of him?
chock, gas etc?

I admit i used low quality oil, valvoline, and I will change it + will change sparks.
But when motor is warm, he start and works perfectly (except this smoke).

4) At end of day, should i turn off gas ventil so he dies when he spent his gas or should i leave him with gas inside of him?

Thanks!

Use a top quality oil, they generally produce less smoke.-------Good oil will save you money on expensive repair work too !!-------To start you fill carburetors with the manual pump ( primer ball )------------Advance throttle in nuetral on the control box. Turn key to crank motor and hold key pushed in till motor starts.-Push key in again if motor wants to stall untill it warms up a bit.

so i shouldnt throttle any gas on start?
just this key-pushing game?

one more thing, once it happened keycrank didnt came back, luckily it was while boat was out of sea and i notice it quickly.
its just add some oil to key lock, right?

thanks alot m8, i didnt get any manual with him :)

You must operate control to advance throttle for first start-up.------------Some controls have a small lever to do that others there is a button to push in . Others you pull handle to side in order to give throttle without shifting into gear.----Picture of the control box helps.---Pushing the key in is not a game , that is how motors are started first time when cold !

here is pic. 2012-05-04 19.24.54.jpg, so I DONT lift this idle speed, just push key(choke) untill motor take it itself, right?2012-05-04 19.25.37.jpg

I am sorry i ask twice, English language make me unsure about those terms I am not familiar what they mean :)

Thanks for help and patience

You MUST lift the small lever and hold the key in while cranking ,for cold starting of the motor !!----It even says " lift for fast idle " and warm-up on it.-Experiment with it as to how far you lift it.----------Lift it all the way and see how the motor starts !------As soon as motor starts you need to slow it down as high revolutions per minute in nuetral can damage the motor.
