Hard Grounding

Got a 85hp Yamaha on a 17 Mako. (Experience is with much smaller outboards) Son took it out the other day and grounded it on a sandbar. This engine has no shear pin that I can see. Now engine will not push at anything above 2000 rpm. How does this prop "shear" to avoid major damage? Is the "protection" in the prop hub ? Like I said, new to larger outboards. Just so everyone thinks I'm a complete dunce, my primary fishing boat is a 26 Bertram with twin mercruisers !!

there is a rubber ''clutch'' between the hub and the blades....it may be shot and slipping...you can scribe or mark the two parts and see if the marks stay aligned after running...if they dont then the prop is slipping...a prop shop can replace the ''clutch''...

you can hear the motor rev up with a prop clutch failure..it just loses power because its slipping...anyone who owns a Mako is not a dunce..lol

Thxs for quick response .... probably need to replace prop. Tip on one of the blades was bent really BAD! I can't find prop size on the prop .... only #0113! Tried looking up the number to no avail ! Son said sounds like gear mesh problem at high rpm

dont run with the prob that bad...let a prop shop look at it...it may be fixable and much cheaper than a new one..hopefully it is just the prop and running with a bad prop could be misleading on sound...you also could just put the motor in nuetral and eyeball the shaft when you turn it and see if its turning true before you put it in the water....no sense even putting it in if obviously more damage...

Sandbar is soft... Not like hitting rock at high speed. I doubt you have gear damage. Probably "spun a prop" as in that rubber internal hub that seperates the outside prop and blades to the inside that is driven by the shaft did its job and is now toast. Pull the prop and send it out. They can fix some unbelievable messes these days and restore them to perfect condition.

Exactly what happened !! First want to thank you guys for the help. Dropped the prop off at the local prop guy and had it back by 5:30pm (65 bucks new internal hub and repaired and rebalanced the prop) Back to running fine and Installing depth sounder lol !! thxs again
