Hard cold starting 2001 Merc 2 cycle 150 HP OB

Greeetings from coastal NC...Less than 200 hours, carbueratored 150 HP Merc OB 2 cycle Saltwater series...New Plugs installed, fuel filter & primer bulb...Very hard starting, she's primed before turning the key...Once she starts she'll turn over all day on the 1st turn of the key....Any suggestions? Thanks!
 
I have a a '95 like yours. Here's what I do and it works 99% of the time..I make sure the bulb is tight. I lower the engine to the bottom of the tilt or lower. Turn the key to the on position and depress it for 5 seconds, then bump the engine over with the starter (three or four revolutions) Depress the key again for 5 seconds, raise the idle lever and start it. When its cooler, like now, I depress the key for maybe 8 or to 10 seconds each time. If it doesn't start, repeat the first depress one more time...BF
 
The pressure check valve that pressurizes the oil tank needs to be changed. You cannot clean this part. It costs around $15.00. When this service part goes bad it will continue to allow oil into the fuel system when the engine is shut down at the end of use, causing a hard start the next day.
 
Interesting. I assume that would cause the motor to smoke more than normal at start up? Is this the case?

This part will cause hard starting. Especially after sitting overnight. It is easy enough to check. There should be zero pressure in the oil tank shortly after shut down. Run your engine and then shut it down, wait about three minutes and loosen the oil cap on the tank. If air purges the check valve needs to be replaced. You cannot clean this part. Any time I have a hard initial start on these engines, when all parts are performing as they should, I change this part. Problem solved.
