Harbour water allergy

My 1978 Mariner 55 (2 cyl Yamaha version) hates the water at our local boat ramp. It will start effortlessly in the driveway, runs beautifully on the water, but hates starting/idling when the boat is sitting in water (not just at the one boat ramp). Last year I stripped and cleaned the carbs replacing all the gaskets, needles, seats etc. The fuel lines and tank were purchased new last year. I recently had a leaking fuel hose connector but have ruled out insecure connections. What else could be the problem. I thought of incresing the idle but in the driveway it would be too much. I'm running standard non-ethanol unleaded pre-mix at 40:1 with Castrol 2 stroke oil. When I had the carbs off I checked out the reeds and they looked fine. Any suggestions greatfully recieved.
 
I'll be I know: You fired it up at home, didn't run the carbs dry, left the fuel hose connected (possibly with the vent closed), then tilted the motor up and bounced it all the way to the ramp, resulting in a flooded motor.

Sound possible? Easy to find out.

racerone: not something I had thought of so I'll give it a try.
fastjeff: usually the afternoon before but right on the money by the sound of it (fuel hose disconnected but engine left with fuel in carb bowls etc - ie not run dry).
kimcrwbr1: original service manual shows the same ratio, cool, less oil per tank of gogo juice, this is what I have been using (any good/no good ??):

We have a winner! Yesterday I fired up the outboard to ensure all was well only this time I disconnected the fuel line at the tank and waited for the outboard to run dry before preparing everything else for today's outing. This morning at the ramp it started so easily and idled nicely with a minimum of choke and ran flawlessly for the rest of the day. The starter motor gave some grief which will feature as a thread of its own. No more leaving fuel in the system for us though, so much embarrassment at the ramp will now be avoided thank-you. I'm sure I will find other ways to entertain the bystanders, no doubt.

Good deal. Your carbs will also stay cleaner by adopting this procedure--especially with "Evil-Nol" gas.

Hint to others: Run 'em dry every time you finish with your outboard(s)! I installed a butterfly valve near the motor on my boat so I merely have to turn it off.
