Guru Needed... Driveshaft discrepancies

I’m looking for someone who can tell me why my 1985Evinrude 30hp E30ECOA has a drive shaft in it that is 25 3/4” long (part number 323261) but the schematic callsfor a drive shaft that is 24 1/8” (part number 328316).

I also have a 1978 Johnson 35hp 35r78r that I removed thedriveshaft from last night and the schematic has the part number for it labeled323261. Which is the same thing that I pulled out of the 1985 Evinrude.
Are all short shaft drive shafts interchangeable alsolong as the spline count is the same even though shaft length is differentbetween certain numbers of years?

I just checked my OMC parts book (30hp E30ECOA) ... yes the standard DS is part number 323261. Long shaft is #328317.

I would assume that someone has somehow converted that engine to a different length. The driveshafts are interchangeable as long as the splines match, are the proper diameter, and the water pump key-way is in the proper location.

Thanks Joe! This has been driving me nuts!

So your book is saying the correct driveshaft for the E30ECOA is 323261? If so then I have the correct drive shaft and all the diagrams online are incorrect.

That is correct.

However...Question: You state in your initial post, and I quote... "but the schematic calls for a drive shaft that is 24 1/8” (part number 328316)." This schematic you speak of... Where did you find that?

Wow, Yeah.... That'd confuse a person pretty well wouldn't it? I double checked the numbers (all of them) to see if they superseded or interchanged in some manner to no avail. And in double checking my OMC parts book, that book, (which it and all other OMC books have been my bible of part numbers), as far as I'm concerned lists the proper number of 323261 for the standard driveshaft for engine model E30ECOA.

There had to be a upgrade revision in either my books which go years back, or the schematic you listed that neither of us is aware of.

WOW! That’s crazy! I’ve looked at other website diagrams as well and the too list the shorter 24 1/8” shaft.

This all started because my current driveshaft is pitted and the coating has flaked off right where the lower unit oil seals are. So I began looking for a used shaft based off the part number from the diagram on this website. When I found a used shaft it listed it as 24 1/8” long and a spline count of 14. So I measured the shaft I removed and found it to be longer but the spline count the same. Luckily there was actually a part number engraved on the longer shaft then my great drive shaft search started. Haha!

I just dropped on the 323261 at the hydraulic repair shop we use at the plant. He’s going to clean it up and see what he can do. Luckily I’m getting the good neighbor discount.

Joe, I appreciate your time in helping me figure all this out!
