I have a 1992 thompson with an alph1 gen2 and 155hp v6. I have a grinding sound when turning and it is only really noticeable when in gear.It grinds and kinda vibrates the boat aswell. I don't hear it when in neutral but its obvious when in gear at idle and at speed. Thanks for any advice.

Re: Grinding sound when turning need help

Gimbal bearing might be bad from a hole in the main bellows boot, when was the drive pulled and serviced last?
Any water leaking into the boat?

Re: Grinding sound when turning need help

I just bought the boat last month and this was the first time i had it out. No water entering the boat and both bellows look like new. Could it be a bad u joint or does it sound like a gimble

Re: Grinding sound when turning need help

Pull the drive off (which you'd have to do regalrdless) and take a look at the u-joints, drive coupling, and gimbal bearing.

Re: Grinding sound when turning need help

A tell tale sign of a gimbal bearing failure is

when you turn left or right, you will hear and or feel a grumbling sound. As it gets worse the noise will get louder.

no matter what the problem is and you may get 20 different senerios here, the outdrive must be removed and the ujoints and gimbal bearing must be checked and serviced or replaced as needed.........

Ujounts in most cases are the last thing to go and usually only due to poor maintenance.

Re: Grinding sound when turning need help

Sounds are hard to descibe over the internet. I had a knocking sound that could also be felt when going slow and turned hard over either direction. I pulled my drive and could not detect any play at all in the u-joints. When the drive was out I stuck 2 fingers into the gimbal bearing and rotated, smooth as silk and no detectable play. I replaced my u-joints anyway based on symptom. They were my problem.

Yes I agree,

He does not state wether he is in salt or not.

When I do not see any deatils as SO MANY WHO POST FORGET.

i tend to view most as fresh water use.

BUT poor maitenance still covers the salt intrusion if it is not dealt with appropriatly...........just sayin...

Re: Grinding sound when turning need help

The boat has always been in fresh water. Both bellows look new so I wonder if one went bad and let water get to the gimble and they only replaced the bellows.

Re: Grinding sound when turning need help

Water intrusion is not the only thing that can cause bearing failure. Just as often it's lack of regular lubrication and engine mis-alignment. The owners manual has instructions on both. Alignment requires a special tool and removing the bearing may also.
