Grinding noise when starting

I was out on my boat all day fishing and at the end of the day it made a grinding noise when trying to start it. I had a rope and manually started it to get back to the boat ramp. I dont now if its the starter or selonoid , hopefully nothing to major. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Its a 1974 20 hp Evinrude electric start.

Loose or corroded battery cable connections can make the starter solenoid chatter or buzz loudly. Don't just look at the cables, take them apart and clean them shiny bright and reassemble tightly.

Try a voltage drop test between starter and battery, place one probe of dvm on the positive battery post, not cable connection and other probe on the positive post of starter, take reading, There should not be a reading higher than .4 volts in drop, if higher possible internal corrosion inside of cables

Has the starter and flywheel been inspected visually for damaged teeth, Is bendix drive pushing starter gear up and meshing with flywheel properly?
