"Hello, I've recently bought a bass boat with a mercury mariner 40 magnum motor, serial #0c202592. I've looked all over to find the year and specs of the motor without any luck. Also, can anyone recomend the best site to buy parts. I would like to get a good manual for it to repair the trim which makes noise like it's trying to work, but doesn't lift the motor. thanks"

"Thanks Mark for sending me those sites. Unfortunately the serial number guide only goes up to 1990 and I think mine might be a newer model and so was'nt on the list. I'm not even sure if I have a two or four stroke. Is there a way to know by just looking at the motor? Again, thanks Mark, I'll definately be using that parts link once I know what motor I have."

"Lane, your "Magnum" which was just a "cool" name that Merc put on the model is a 1989. It was also configured as a Jet Drive (30 horse, due to the power loss with a jet)

It is a 2 stroke, 4 cylinder model.

Here's an OEM parts link with diagrams, parts numbers and prices - just follow the link exactly and you can find anything you might need...

"Graham, I really appreciate you taking the time to give me the info on my Magnum 40hp. Once I get the manual, I'll start fixing the motor's problems and I suspect posting more questions on this site (which I'm glad I stumbled on)."

"Hi there Lane,

Always remember to use a 50:1 fuel:eek:il ratio.

I say this as you seemed uncertain as to it being a 2 or 4 stroker. I've seen guys fry a 2 stroker because they did not know it had to be pre-mixed...

Happy boating, winter on it's way here now...

All the best!"
