" I have been having trouble starting my 1983 Johnson 90hp V4 engine for the last week. I just noticed a puddle of black substance on the driveway where I have the boat parked. I am not sure what this substance is. It looks kind of like grease but does not feel like grease. There is also a collection of this stuff just on the inside of the prop and appears some has leaked down where the prop is connected to the foot. Does anyone have any idea what this stuff is?Also, could this be a bad problem? "

horaceman it sounds to me like its raw fuel and oil thats draining out of the powerhead from your repeated efforts to start the engine.i woudnt worry about it. is your engine firing at all? if not you need to check everything to see why it isnt

" Mike,
I think you are right

" Mike,
I think you are right about the oil and gas draining out. I am able to get the engine to fire up now but it will not stay on. I have a fresh batch of gas and oil mixed at 50:1. I have also flushed the carbs out twice by removing the bolts on side of the float chambers and priming gas through them. I am open ears if you have any suggestions. Thanks for the response. "

" Mike,
I just bought brand new plugs on Friday. The whole problem centers around the fact that I took alot of salt water in the hull and managed to contaminate the inboard gas tank. After I pumped the water out of the hull, I was able to run the motor. I ran it for a few minutes and then shut it down. After a few hours, I was unable to start the motor again. "

" looking back at an earlier post i see that joe had you blow out the carbs etc.. i at this point i would pull the carbs and rebuild them, either thouroghly clean all fuel lines pumps etc.. or replace them. personaly id remove the fuel tank and clean it also.this is the only way i can see to get all of the salt water out of the system.
