" I have seen late model outbo

" I have seen late model outboards (ie 2001 models)advertised for sale on quite a few web sites. Many state that they are lease returns and come with a 60 day manuf. warranty. Could anyone tell me where the resellers are picking them up? And lastly, any stories/advice good or bad to pass along from anyone who has made a purchase. "

" a lot of leased outboards we

" a lot of leased outboards were leased to state agencies, and companies that would rather lease than buy. many of these engines are abused and neglected, including many hard hours. the old saying "you get what you pay for" "

" HI BOB. I AM A MERC DEALER I

" HI BOB. I AM A MERC DEALER IN ONTARIO CANADA. I HAVE BEEN SELLING OFF LEASE ENGINES FOR 15 YEARS. THEY ARE A GREAT DEAL.I GO OVER THEM THOROUGHLY BEFORE THE CUSTOMER TAKES DELIVERY AND HAVE NEVER HAD ONE COME BACK FOR WARRANTY. MOST OF THE ENGINES COME FROM NORTHERN ONTARIO FISHING AND HUNTING CAMPS. THE SEASON IS SHORT THEREFORE THE ENGINES DON'T GET A LOT OF USE AND MOST LOOK LIKE NEW.YOUR DEALER CAN RUN THE SERIAL # AND TELL YOU WHICH LODGE OWNED IT, WHEN THEY BOUGHT IT, AND IF THERE WAS ANY WARRANTY REPAIR DONE TO IT. IF YOU CAN'T FIND WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR PLEASE GIVE ME A TRY. I KEEP THE POPULAR MODELS IN STOCK. GOOD LUCK......BRIAN "

" when I made my reply I said

" when I made my reply I said a lot of them are leased from companies that do run them hard, I apologize if my inference was all of them , its just like anything else we invest in and that we research it before purchase.
good luck in which ever direction you go. "

Is the reason for the 60 day

Is the reason for the 60 day warranty period because of commercial use? Thanks humblechoice and brian for your inputs. Bob

" I've heard some dealers

" I've heard some dealers lease outboards, but never have heard any feedback on wether or not leasing makes sense. Maybe someone could tell me if this is more or less economical than buying. Maybe they could also state what factors would make a customer want to lease rather than buy and what the length of a typical OB lease is. Really like to hear from Twin Rivers Marina on this one since you all lease motors, but anyone with factual information's feedback will be appreciated. "

" Hi,

I'm not sure abou

" Hi,

I'm not sure about the lease returns. I thought about it when I was looking to buy something near new, but without actually being able to look at what I was buying, it seemed a little risky. There is a "checklist" for the items they inspect/replace prior to a sale, but it is very vague and there is quite a bit of slop as to what may pass. Another thing I wonder about is if they are broken in correctly and as someone allready stated, how they are treated. I know the way I treat a rental car, and the same would go for an outboard.

I just took a look at one of the larger sites that sells these, and not all are what I would consider a good deal; the smaller engines are priced fairly well, but many of the larger ones can be bought new for the same prices they are asking. They publish the MSRP to show the huge savings, but nobody pays that anyway.

Just recently I purchased a new outboard, which was a 2001 leftover, for about the same price that they are charging for some the lease returns.
If you want to find a good deal, try and dig up someone who has some leftovers. My two cents,

Jon "

" BOB, THE REASON THERE IS A 6

" BOB, THE REASON THERE IS A 60 DAY WARRANTY IS SIMPLY TO GIVE YOU SOME ASSURANCE THAT MERCURY IS STANDING BEHIND THE ENGINE YOU ARE PURCHASING................. JDKLINE,I DON'T LEASE THE ENGINES TO THE CAMPS. I AM PURCHASING THE YEAR OLD LEASED ENGINES FROM MERCURY AND THEN SELLING THEM TO MY CUSTOMERS. MOST OF THESE RESORTS ARE HUNDREDS OF MILES NORTH OF ME. THE RESORTS MAKE PAYMENTS ON THE ENGINES FOR 6 MONTHS [PROBABLY USE THEM FOR 4 MONTHS] AND THEN RETURN THEM TO THEIR SELLING DEALER. NO PAYMENTS OVER THE WINTER MONTHS. THE NEXT SEASON THE RESORT GETS NEW ENGINES AGAIN. THIS WAY THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS AND THEY ALWAYS HAVE NEW PRODUCT WHICH IS GOOD FOR REPEAT CLIENTELE.THE SELLING DEALER GOES OVER THE RETURNED ENGINE, REBOXES IT AND RETURNS IT TO MERCURY. THEN I BUY IT, GO OVER IT AGAIN SO I AM SATISFIED AND THEN SELL IT TO MY CUSTOMER WITH 60 DAYS WARRANTY. EVERYBODY WINS.HOPE THIS EXPLAINS THE PROCESS......BRIAN "
