"Here is my newest issue. I started hearing a strange sound. It is concerning enough that I dont want to run the engine to try and isolate where it is coming from. I was hoping one of you guys with more experience could perhaps identify it by hearing it. here is a link to a short clip of the engine running at idle for about 10 seconds. The boat is out of the water on muffs.

"I figured it would be difficult to identify the sound just by hearing it. Not sure where to go from here. I guess the next step is to pull the valve cover and see if any of the valves are bent and rubbing, then I guess the head and look for cylinder/piston issues. Anyone have any other ideas? I thought about pulling the belt off to see if it is the water pump or alternator making the noise. Can I run the engine for 30 seconds or so without the engine water pump and alternator turning?"

"pull the belts definitly you

"pull the belts definitly you can run for 30sec without belts wont hurt especialy if engine is cold when you start it. It sounds squeally, rubby not what i would expect from a valve or piston, they would give a knocking noise."

To me it sounds like the circu

To me it sounds like the circulating pump has collapsed bearings. Have a feel of the pump pulley and see if there is any play in the water pump. Do as sam says and remove the belts and run it shortly and see if the noise dissapears then go from there.

could also take the outdrive o

could also take the outdrive off and try running it...then pull the intermediate shaft and try running it...

"ug. Just pulled the outdrive

"ug. Just pulled the outdrive and did a full service. Hope it isnt in the intermediate, dont think it is the outdrive, and really hoping it is the pump. I rebuilt the carb last night, so I will pull the belt and try that as soon as I get the carb put back on (this was for the warm start failure I am trying to fix)."

"Ok, pulled the belt. It is n

"Ok, pulled the belt. It is not the alternator or water pump. The sound still exists but only at idle. Once just above the idle I no longer hear the noise. Any other ideas other than pulling the outdrive and intermediate?"

"robert

I'll tell you what is sounds like to me...hope this helps you. It sounds like the flywheel is touching the inspection plate everytime is goes around...or one of the small bolts is loose and touching the inspection plate. I would remove the inspection plate and see if there is rub mark on it from contact. If not, look in the starter area and see if there is bolt protruding too far and touching. The funny thing is, when it is one of these things, the noise is only there at idle INITIALLY...but it will get worse."

thanks for the idea. I will c

thanks for the idea. I will check it out as soon as I can get to it. I did recently replace the starter. Perhaps I have either a loose bolt or maybe I put a bolt in and missed a washer causing the bolt to seat to far in. I will look. thanks.

I would fire it up with the drive off (momentarily -don't want to run it long as there is no water making it to the motor). This would at least rule out the drive (upper and lower).
