GM 3.0 electronic ignition with mech fuel pump problem

Hello all, looking into a Delco Voyager distributor for my 80's 3 liter but it looks like the new cap will be into the fuel pump. Can't find a readily available answer out there. I have heard something about an inverted fuel pump or a modification to the existing but it was a while ago and I don't remember where I found even that little bit of info. Would love to hear if anyone has had some experience with this. Thanks all!

So what wrong with the orig dist and ign system? most fuel pump filters hang down and the pump should not interfere with a dist.

If you have to change out the disti, and fuel pump in the way, an electric fuel pump ,with an oil pressure "enable" switch installed as well (USCG regs) an option.

Being an '80s motor it has a mechanical fuel pump...................

WHats wrong with your distributor?

Is it you want to go from points to electronic?

Reply with a part number or link to the distributor you want to use...............

This pump actually sticks up, quite a bit. The Delco Voyager distributor has a large square side where the connectors plug in that is going to be really close to hitting the pump. Easiest thing may be to just swap out the distributor and see how it shakes out. I have found a new model pump that is shorter, that may be the ticket regardless.

There's nothing wrong with the ignition, just tired of points and condensers. We boat a lot on big water and pretty far north into British Columbia so I carry a lot of parts with me. We have had a couple break downs over the years, probably makes me over-prepare a little.

I found a Delco Voyager distributor, it has a big square flange for the connectors that is aimed right at the fuel pump. This original pump is pretty tall, but I have found a smaller new style pump that looks like it might fit fine.

And I haven't really monkeyed with anything for a long time, just chose this season to stir things up a little. Why use something that works fine when you can open a big can of worms playing around with new parts?!

Ayuh,... Can't ya rotate the body,..??

The 3.0l hasn't really changed much in it's years of production,...
One of the filter down mechanical fuel pumps will bolt right on,...

Hookin' up the fuel lines might be a problem though, depends on the pump clocking,...

'n if ya ain't added a canister type fuel filter, Now is a Great time too,...

I have found some of those newer pumps, I am surprised how many parts are out there. They obviously made, and still do, a bunch of those engines. And as for a spin on, never had a boat without one. Even put on in my rowboat. Thanks for the note

If the engine is running good on points it dont need to be fixed. Put in new points and condenser and adjust them with a dwell meter. Use a timing light to map out the advance curve. If you have issues with the progressive timing advance then install a new distributor or get that one rebuilt and curved. While the engine is running put you hand on the ignition coil, if it is getting hot just install a ballast to coil pos and run it till it pukes.
