"Look at the plate on the transom bracket that is in the center of the yellow square I drew on your picture. That should have the Model # and Serial# of the motor stamped on it. If you post back the model# from the plate that will allow it to be decoded exactly.

"That's a bummer. I believe those same numbers were stamped on freeze plugs on the block, but I don't know exactly where to tell you that is located.

For a long time (maybe even yet on current models?), the 9.9 and 15HP engines were cosmetically identical. There are many small lakes that have 10HP limits. A very common trick was for owners to remove any "proof" of an engine being a 15HP, putting on a 9.9HP decal (or entire hood), and sneaking past the game warden with a little bit faster boat. Obviously I can't say that's the case with your motor, but it is a bit mysterious that the ID plate is gone.

Anyway, look over the freeze plugs and the block and you might find either a serial# or Model# stamped somewhere else. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

"The paint scheme is significantly different than a 1976. If your motor looks like this (James), then it's either a 1980, has a 1980 cowl on it, or has been painted."
