" I hit something in the water

" I hit something in the water and I broke my gimble ring. I'm having troube removing the steering arm which looks like it is the only thing holding the ring. Do I have to remove the engine and transom assembly??? Also, do the two shafts that sit in the gimble ring sides unscrew? Is there any easy way to do this?? Also I'm having trouble finding diagrams with breakdowns on this. I'ts a 1998 model Alpha 1 model. "

" David ~ There is no need to

" David ~ There is no need to remove the engine etc. Youre local merc dealer will sell you a kit that will include a (most imporant) template, plugs & nuts etc. The deal is ~ drill 2 holes in transom shield & then remove steering arm fasteners thru these holes! It`s all in the Merc manuals & is not a pleasant job. As for the pins - they unscrew. Fot this type of work you need the proper info that is only avaiavle thru Merc. Invest in a Service manual & after reading a few in house tools. "
