Im trying to order gimbal bearing for my Mc 165 outdrive but the system is suggesting there are several HSG assembly options. Not sure what this is referring to

I have an early 70s mc 165 hp inline 6. Outdrive serial is 4443838

Any ideas? Does not appear to be a MC part number. Is there a Gimbal assembly or transom plate #?

I think some of the early gimbal bearing housings used a snap rig to retain the gimbal vs the later tolerance ring.

Normally yes the transom housing has a serial number too. Given the age wouldn’t depend on the drive serial matching the transom housing. May need to pull the drive and see what is in there first

sierra 18-2100 will work. If you have the snap ring. remove and discard it. Install the new bearing until fully seated. You will not be able to grease it until you make a tool for it.A old tolerance ring, is whats needed

Morning BT thanks for the info. Could you elaborate a bit more? Snap ring is the bearing retainer? And why can't it be greased? I also see there is a non-greased bearing option. Maybe easier to pop that in vs greased version, also see some original bearings still available.

the shim kits are NLA, the perma-lube bearing will also work. cant grease it because you dont have the grease fitting on the side of the transom housing. The tool I made was for greasing the bearing. Installed with the slots facing aft, you flip the bearing to remove it . Install in the tool to grease it and the flip it back into your ring

but I do have the grease fitting on my housing.? I can see myself making additional parts. Looking for an straight forward solution,

then you have a mis-match of parts. The early drives did not use a grease fitting they used shims and a plastic housing. This fitting is at the 3:00 in the housing on the right side.
