"First let me say that I have never owned or worked on a boat before. I am a 20 year HVAC technician in the commercial and industrial end of the field. I recently put an offer in on a 1994 Rinker 265 Fiesta Vee with a Merc 7.4 with a Bravo II. The offer was accepted pending a survey. Aside from a list of minor problems, the surveyor noted about 3 inchs of side to side play in the stern drive. I mentioned this to the broker and he had his service manager look at it. The service manager said that this can be adjusted. I then spoke with a marine mechanic whom gave me a few things to look for the next time go out to the broker. The mechanic does not seem to think that this can be adjusted. Can someone please tell me the best way to tell if the thing is shot. Thanks in advance."

"If the existing hardware is tight ,then the excess play is either the gimbal ring against the square pin, the steering arm against the pin, or the power steering system where the cable attaches. Will have to look closely as to where the play actually exists.
most likely the gimbal ring has excessive play from corrosion and will need repair along with the pin."
