Gimbal Bearing Ring

"I recently pulled and replace

"I recently pulled and replaced my outdrive leg on my 1999 Crownline BR 5.7 Volvo Penta (Vortec) boat. While struggling to re-install the outdrive, I found this mettle ring in the space where the gimbal bearing resides. I am guessing it is part of the bearing. Can I ignore it, or am I in jeopardy of burning up my bearing? I ran the boat this weekend for about 1 hour without the ring and I didn't hear any strange noise or feel any vibration comming from the outdrive area.

Maybe I should mention...The penny is simply there to give perspective on the size of the mettle o ring.

Help!

"What year is the engine model

"What year is the engine model and what drive are we talking about? I've tried a few times to give you my opinion, but without more details is like looking for the needle in the haystack. In any case, that o-ring does not look as being a part of a bearing to me (it is an o-ring, isn't it? the picture is sort of blurry)."

"Yes, it is a flexable mettle

"Yes, it is a flexable mettle o ring. I repowered my boat with a vortec 350. It replaced my Volvo Penta 5.7. I have a Volvo SX outdrive. I found this o ring in the tunnel that the yoke runs through as I was reinstalling my outdrive in the final steps of re-powering.

Thanks for the reply!!!!"

"No. Number 31 is two smaller

"No. Number 31 is two smaller black rubber o-rings. I think it might be part number 29. How important is part number 29 (smiling as I type that, because every part has a purpose)?"

"Well, I hate to tell you this

"Well, I hate to tell you this, but if part 29 is not installed then water will ingress in the outdrive. Part 29 seals between part 18 and part 2.
So, how important do you think it would be?

On the bright side (if it is indeed part 29), you may have left the old o-ring 29 installed, and it would likey be OK.

"Would part 29 be packed insid

"Would part 29 be packed inside the uper outdrive housing, or would it be inside the transom? I found the o-ring lying just inside part 18 (I think). Any chance you have a link to a picture of part 29? Then I would know for sure."

"That's the spot, but I am

"That's the spot, but I am not sure that's the part. Part 39 looks small. The mettle o-ring is about an inch and a quarter in diamater."

"Well, if you cannot identify

"Well, if you cannot identify the part, maybe the part does not belong there and you (we) are chasing a ghost???

"I printed out the outdrive diagram. I am taking the diagram and the part down to my local marine parts store to see if I can identify it. I appriciate your time and effort!! Once again, you put me on the right track. Thank you!!"

"El,

I found it. The mettle ring is actually part of part number 63 from the transome shield diagram you sent me.

I need to make a decision. Should I replace part number 63, or can I run with that part missing this spring/ring?

If I replace part 63 (gimbal bearing seal), I will probably need to replace the gimbal bearing as well.

Any opinions?"

"If the bearing gets water/deb

"If the bearing gets water/debris, you will create a big problem for yourself. IMO, do it once & do it right."

"I thought you'ed say that

"I thought you'ed say that. OK, last question. Can you offer any link to a set of instructions for replacing a gimble bearing?"

"Unfortunately, I cannot. The

"Unfortunately, I cannot. The Seloc manual has a procedure in page 12-23, but that procedure is described as "difficult" and you need some special tools to carry it."

"I have a Clymer Manual, and it too indicates this procedure is difficult and requires special tools. So, this is not the first time I've had to do something difficult. "Put me in coach"! I'll let you know when I am finished."
