I have a 1979 898 merc stern drive and need to replace the gimbal bearing and drive shaft bellows. What tools do I need and where is a good source for these tools. I see many tools listed but the descriptions are vague. Any one have experience in this area? Thanks in advance for any help.

I do not believe anyone on this board has ANY experince with this type of work............NOT!!

Nick if you have never done this before I would reccommend having someone who has.

You need several special tools and a bit of experience. Not that it is hard but it is one of those things that is best learned from someone who has done it.

Also with the age of your boat you may have the old set up with a snap ring holding the bearing shell and if it has seen salt water there is a good chance the snap ring will have a tough time comming out.

If you look at some of the older posts going back a week or so I detailed some special tools (pictures) of what I use.

"I was asleep when this thread was started, I'm in Australia.

I had a 1978 225 and worked on the leg a few times. The only special tool I needed was the alignment tool.

It will have the plastic snap ring for the gimbal bearing, just tap the bearing at 90 degrees to the notches and you can pull it out with your fingers.

Easy to replace the u-joint and exhaust bellows. just a bugger to get them to seal, make sure all surfaces are very clean and use the adhesive."

"Kghost-As I remember from the post, you made those tools. If interested in making more, I would be interested in buying!

Nick-Sorry for walking on your post, but I am new at this too and interested in what people say on this too.

Thanks,jt."

"The answer of removal by tapp

"The answer of removal by tappig is correct.

It is not the reccommended method by Merc.

That being said if you can remove it the way described then it is that easy.

Unfortunatly you have to buy the entire bearing assembly from merc.

If I am not mistaken after the snap ring is removed you can remove the entire bearing assembly and install the newer style in its place.
I am surprised they never offered a kit to drill a grease hole and zerk fitting as a upgrade???

As far as making tools,

I do not have the opportunity any longer to make them Sorry."

Kghost,
I'm con-fusid, on what part would you put the grease hole and zerk other that what is already available?"

On the older transom assemblie

On the older transom assemblies the gimbal was not GEASABLE you simpley twised it in place and removed it and greased it by hand.

After they came out with the grease fitting at 4:00 oclock most forgot to service this old style set up and thus they went bad and had to be replaced.

I also believe that the cut outs in the outer bearing race are there for this purpose ( reomove and grease with somewhat ease)

"hm, must be pre-I drive then?

"hm, must be pre-I drive then?

yea, I never figured out what those cutouts were for.

thanks"
