Gimbal Bearing on a pre Alpha

"Have a 78 Searay 889 with a pre Alpha Merc. Drive removed the Gimbal bearing but can't get sleeve out ( using a slide hammer ) seems like the ring that holds the drive boot is in the way (see pic) any help would be very welcome

What type of end are you using

What type of end are you using on the slide hammer? Claws dont work that good and frequently pull out.

"this is the type of end i've had success with. from a KD Tools kit. The ring that holds the boot doesn't usually restrict the bearing. (unless it's corroded, which shouldn't happen if it's properly greased)

Reinstall the bearing and pull

Reinstall the bearing and pull the bearing out with the carrier.Save the old ring to make a greasing tool.A new bearing comes with a new ring anyway

Why does the boot have a hard inner sleeve?

I thought all boots fit outside the bearing housing?

Even so it should pull out of there as it had to go in!! ( the bearing that is)

Are you sure ther is not a snap ring stuck ina groove??

You live close enough if you need it I could lend you my slide hammer with a three jaw puller and a ten pound hammer.

only pre-1970 had the spring clip/retaining clip. But I've personally had a heck of a time trying to use claws.. they just dont work that well, The head that KD Tools has works great..

There is no hard inner sleeve on alpha or pre-alpha, he's looking at the casting of the gimbal housing.

there is a seal on the inside he could be going to far and trying to pull the seal, maybe he has enough room to have someone peek there head inside and look at the back of the engine to see where the claws are grabbing."

"some folks have devised a fixture where the bearing is pulled out using long allthread rod and two nuts, a flat plate with a threaded hole in the center across the gimbal housing, another flat piece that fits behind the inner ring of the bearing, and by turning a nut, the bearing is pulled out. this requires access to a machine shop or knowing someone who works in one. before i installed my new bearing, i put it in the freezer overnite, rubbed powdered graphite in the bore of the housing, then heated the housing with a hair dryer to expand it. to drive it in you need a tool that fits against the outer ring"

As far as installation they sell a threaded adapter and reverse the pull process.

I have posted my tools here onece with pictures of each tool. I deleted them from my computer and camera so I do not have them.

When one does one or two bearings once in a while it is ok to use some of the tools you speek of.

When doing a LOT of bearings you need a way to make some money off the job by reducing labor.

A slide hammer like mine will pull a gimbal bearing out in 2 pulls!!

the install driver I had a tool made (to my specs) requires a 3 lb short sledge hammer and it takes around 4 - 5 hits to seat the bearing.

Also you need to line up the grease fitting so with my tool you can see where that is supose to be.

Once the outdrive is removed, using my tools it takes aprox, 15-20 minutes to remove and install a bearing."
