Gimbal Bearing Alignment Follow Up Question

First thanks for the responses to my first questions.
How easy should the drive slip in? The drive went in easy until the studs were flush with the outside surface of the drive. From there it took a couple of light kicks with the heel of my foot to get the studs out far enough to start the nuts. It then drew in fairly easily with the nuts. Is this normal? I assumed the resistance was the gasket compressing?

"That resistance is quite normal and is usually the shaft O rings compressing to slide into the gimbal bearing.
I have had this same thing happen a number of times. Once you get the ring into the gimbal, you can normally slide it almost all the rest of the way in simply by pushing on it, or tapping lightly with a rubber mallet.

"right... they get most of the way there and need some man handling to get the shaft o-rings into the gimble bearing. i like to bear hug it and wiggle it up and down, side to side till it closes up tight."

"I've installed thousands of sterndrives in the past 20 years. If you have to kick the drive to get it on you have an alignment problem. It could be a simple adjustment with an alignment bar, or your coupler is "cocked" and needs replacement. If not done properly it could be expensive."
