Getting Proper Spark 20HP Evinrude

I believe its a 89'. Not sure on the model number because everything has been painted over. However its a 20hp short shaft tiller manual start. I am having a problem getting spark. I was told to take the spark plugs out and try, I am getting a good 3/8' inch blue snap with the plugs out. Placing the plugs back in and pulling the cord I get no spark. I am using a spark tester that I got at autozone. The compression is 120-125 on both cylinders. Had it running very well for 4-5 hours next day couldn't start it. Seems I can't pull the cord fast enough to get a spark all of a sudden. Before started fairly easy now I feel like i am going to throw my shoulder out trying to get her to start so I stopped.Any advice would help..

Double check your kill switches to make sure they are not killing your spark. Especially check the safety switch that has the clip. If you are getting any spark with the plugs out, then you should be getting something with them in. I am guessing your spark tester is questionable. On this motor the power pack is generally what will go bad. Sometimes it will just go out on one cylinder. One more test is to pull it and check for spark after dark. Sometimes the coil or other component will have a crack and you will see sparks jumping everywhere. Just some ideas.

Quite simply put -----Fact is , if you can not pull it over fast enuff with the plugs in there will be no spark.----Just the way these things work.----Lots of used electric start kits can be found for them.

Yep, what racerone said. You gotta turn it over fast enough to generate the electricity that is then built up to spark voltage. Just for kicks, get that guy down the street with bulging biceps to give it a yank. Hey, I'm getting to where I am having trouble pulling some of them too.
