Long story short.26hrs on rebuilt fwc 454 mercruiser with new glm risers,The boat sat for 40 days when i started her up she started clanging. the valves stuck, pushrods bent,2 broke and the chambers are rusty the manifolds in the exhaust ports have what looks like salt theres rust "bubbles" inside the risers. The risers were torqed but the gasket looks like it was leaking.?whats the correct gasket the one with 4 open slots or 2 slots and 2 holes[thats what was on there]?

Mercruiser Queries are best asked on that forum. FWIW, the GLM stuff is known for being high quality as far as its finished state. Re the gaskets, being FWC, it doesn't matter how many slots because nothing passes thru those gaskets. Make sure the stainless plate is used is you get the stand-alone gaskets.

Hey Bondo, Nice to hear you

I have used Crusader OEM elbows and manifolds only and the biggest complaint I can find is the painted mating surfaces. They enclose a warning page to remove the paint. Why not just machine it before boxing it up? $$$$$$$$$$$$$ ( I know)

FWIW, that SAME series of events happened to me the first year we bought this boat in 2005...WHAT A MESS. Pushrods bent into the letter "s" and broken into 2" pieces. Rust so strong it appears to have been welded. I feel your pain...as they say

knuckle,

I agree about the mating surface of the Crusader risers/elbows being painted and that the paint has to be removed being installation. But at least, unlike OSCOs, they are pre-painted Crusader blue and require no painting after installation. What method did you use to remove the paint? I expect to be doing the risers and elbows on my log-style exhausts again this year - did them first in spring 2007 - and since the risers have two mating surfaces and the elbows one, that is a total of six surfaces that need to be cleaned (per engine) and as I remember it was not a simple job.

Thanks,
Erich
