Gears grinding in VP 280 leg

"I think my retaining pawl let

"I think my retaining pawl let go while I was backing up which made my leg swing up. Now I can hear loud gears grinding, even in neutral when the engine is running. I'm guessing I broke the main U-joint?

Any suggestions? Ideas? Fixes?

"Those u-joints are pretty hard to destroy. However, if you hear grinding noises, teh first thing you may want to do is to drain the oil in the outdrive. If it is clean and there is no sign of metal, then the problem is likely outside, possibly u-joints or bellhousing bearing."

"I drained the fluid, and it is totally clean with no signs of metal or water. I guess I'll pull the leg off tomorrow and check the u-joint.

"I pulled the leg off and the u-joint is destroyed. When the U-joint broke, it also broke the engine side cover that the bellows attaches to. How can I get that that piece off? (I can't find it in the Clymer Manual.)

"Sorry to say Chris, you have to pull the engine and change the bellhousing as its all one casting. Make sure you put new bearings in the replacement bellhousing. You would be silly not to while its out."
