I'm rehabbing this old Crossflow. Took gearcase apart, and found the pinion gear chewed up (5 teeth, all together, chewed up). I don't understand how, but the other gears look virtually unscathed. I acquired the motor this way, so I have no idea what happened. Any thoughts on what could cause this? Also, I located another OMC v4 hydro assist gearcase which I took apart... parts are in excellent shape. Only problem is, this gear set is 13:26 as opposed to 13:25 in the original gearcase. And, of course, in typical geezer fashion, I've got the parts from both gearcases jumbled together (don't ask). Other than changing my gear ratio from 1.92 to 2.0 should this affect anything else? Might I have issues now that I've got the parts mixed together? (I have the gears sorted out). BTW, I pulled the pumps from both cases. The screen was totally clogged on the damaged case, the other is clean as a whistle. I appreciate any input. Geezer.
 
A lot of those old gearcases interchange, that is.... they bolt up with no problems. The only difference with many of them is simply the gear ratio difference. That's bound to affect performance somewhat on one end or the other of the spectrum... top end, whatever. What exactly... I have no idea, but what the hell, what do you have to lose?

Thanks Joe... As I understand it, the 85 & 115 HP in 1973 had a 2.0:1 gear set, as they did thru 1976. I suspect I have one of those gear cases. Perhaps the ratio change can be offset by prop size, cupping, etc. Any idea what may have ate that pinion gear without hurting the other gears? If it could be caused by an adjustment somewhere, I don't want a repeat in the rebuilt gear case.... Geezer.

No idea at all, excepting possibly that a forward gear was replaced without replacing the pinion. I have never seen a gear go bad without damaging all the gears.

The driveshaft is shimmed of course and if shimmed wrong, usually results in problems... BUT if one gear goes, normally they all go!
