Hi,outboard is 2001 70hp longshaft Johnson, pumps plenty of water but also lots of water coming out around front of lower housing,as tho where water tube goes into waterpump housing not seated in properly.Anyway, main question,do you disconnect the gearshift rod at top end and how do you gain access to the connecting pin? [to remove gearbox ] looks like either remove vero pump or ? appreciate help

Don't get in a rush to remove it yet. A better description of exactly where the water is coming out is needed. But I can tell you that it more than likely is completely normal. There are several drain holes that water normally comes out of. Any water that comes out them is destined to go back to the sea anyway.

noticed when on muffs in driveway,as when in sea, obviously dont notice. As a mechanic I want to make sure everythings ok before we go on holiday.Theres a good stream out of the engine pipe, but also lots of water coming up where the gearshift rod comes out, plus all the drain holes,as tho, like I said the seal around the water tube may not be sealing properly, and if its crook, could further let more water escape meaning less water pressure for the motor when it needs it.So thought of pulling gearbox off to have a look. Most outboards Ive done have been relatively easy, but this looks difficult.Checked the parts diagram to confirm the layout.

Normal. Muffs are an ABNORMAL way to run a motor. Put it in water, measure running temps on heads. SB around 140 degrees.

My bet is normal.

What ??---That won't help one bit-------You can not remove the lower cowl on a 2001 model 70 HP.

As I said, water coming out those places is normal, and has nothing to do with the water tube. On the other hand, you indicate you are taking it apart as preventative maintenance. That is not a bad idea if the water pump impeller has not been changed recently. Once it fails, the damage is done.

I am not smart enough to know exactly how the shift rod disconnects on that particular model, but I can tell you that the usual situation is it disconnects below the lower carburetor, and very often you can do that with a wobble socket on a long extension. Your mileage may differ.
