Gear/throttle issue

Getting towed on Kentucky lake as I type. Out on the boat for a cruise. I got in the water to ski and a friend was driving. He pushed throttle down pretty hard. Engine revved and then we heard a thunk and the engine died. Mercruiser 6.2 8 cylinder 320 hp. Now engine will not turnover. Feels like throttle will not go into neutral to allow for start. All electrical checks out fine. Any thoughts? Thanks.Nagoo

What do you mean by "not turn over'? does the starter go "clunk" and engine will not spin, or nothing happens when you turn the key?
How did you check ignition without engine spinning?
I would be checking the lower unit and the upper unit.

When we turn the key on there are two beeps like normal. Then when I turn key further to start there is no clicking for the starter and the alternator is not turning over. All cables seem to be intact for the throttle. All lights, power, other than engine turning work. What part of lower unit or upper unit could it be? Think the throttle? Gearbox? Something else im not aware of? Thanks.

The engine won't turn over because you can't get it into neutral. I suspect this is a Bravo drive? This typically happens with Bravos that shut down in gear. The clutch is still engaged and not always easy to disengage when not turning. Hot wire the cranking system (at slave solenoid) and jump start with a remote starter switch. Disconnect the coil, you don't want the engine to fire. While you're bumping the starter over, have another person at the helm try to put it into neutral. Start there; the "thump" may be another issue...lets hope not.

I think this may be past my realm of capabilities. I'm all for doing things myself, but I think this would be beyond my scope. Any idea what something like this would cost to get fixed at the local shop? Your answer may determine whether or not my capabilities are up for a challenge. Thanks for your input.
