Gear shift problem

"Hi, I am a new member to this forum from Perth, Western Australia. I have a 3250 Bayliner with two 1989 OMC 5.8 Fords and Cobra legs, both R.H. rotation. The motors have been completely rebuilt and converted to fresh water cooling. No one over here seems interested in OMC's now, especially service and repair people - it is all Mercruiser and Volvo's and the like.
My problem, which happened suddenly and without any clunks is that when the gear lever is engaged in either the forward or reverse positions nothing happens. There is no resistance, however slight or normal when doing this. Dual steering stations - cabling is working at least to the motors.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Bernie."

Both drives don't shift? And the cables move to the motor and the shift converter moves when you push the throttles down?

Did they hook the lower cables back up to the converters?

"did this happen under way, or since docked... if the latter, check to see if someone stole your props...

Have also seen props almost disappear from galvanic shore power issues at a marina
have heard of entire drives disappearing...pile of gears and shafts on the bottom"

If it did happen under way did both motors overheat?

If yes both? Couplers went?

Thats what i can't get my head around both motors and drives.

Me thinks they didn't hook up the cables.

You think the props fell off? HAH!

Thanks for your responses. Its good to know there are knowledable people out there willing to help. My problem with the gear shift happened while we were under way escorting a long distance swimming team so there was a lot of forward neutral shifting etc. Everything was working OK one moment and then not the next! Prop is still on. Anondes changed regularly. My feeling is prehaps there is a problem inside the leg requiring the boat to be slipped. Boat was slipped October 09 for annual anti-fouling and I removed both legs for grease-ups etc of uni joints etc. Everything ran fine until the shift problem.
I am trying to gather as much information as possible before starting on repairs.

The problem is in the gear shift of one motor only. It did not overheat. The motor still operates but will not drive the propellor.

"If the drive is off then look at the shift bellcrank M in the pic below, does it go up and down as you shift from forward into reverse? If not your lower shift cable may have let go.

"Bernie, Let's hope for the best, and hope that it is a cable issues only!

You mention that you have only M/C and Volvo shops there. Note that the Cobra can be replaced with the Volvo Penta SX drive should you find trouble severe enough to warrant such a change.
Your local V/P shop should know about this conversion.
