Gear shift problem

"Hello and good day. I have a Mercury 9.8 hp unit manufactured in Mississauga Ontario serial number 7157716.

I was experiencing erratic waterflow through the discharge hole last Fall shortly before storing the unit in an unheated garage over the winter here in Nova Scotia.

This Spring, I bought an impeller kit to install in the motor but discovered that it would not shift into gear, either forward or reverse. I pulled the lower unit off and discovered that the impeller was indeed damaged- I can repair that with the impeller kit that I bought..

The concern now is the shifting problem. I think that water collected in the lower unit from the last time I used it, froze and damaged the shifting mechanism.

At present, I'm trying to remove the propeller...

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks."

I should have added that the gear shift lever on the side of the motor moves back and forth as before but the prop does not turn.

Thanks again. Best wishes to the group.

"Are you lucky? If so, you simply have the shifter up top incorrctly aligned with the shift rod in the LU.

However, on some Mercs, you can turn the LU shifter rod past reverse, and then it won't come back. If that's the case, the propeller shaft needs to be partly removed so the shift cam can be rotated back.

Either way, the LU has to come off again.

Thanks for the post Jeff. I discovered the shifter problem before the LU came off- it was not caused during the re-assembly.

Last Fall I knew that I had an impeller problem. Before I took the LU off a day or so ago I started the unit in a water barrel. That's when I discovered that I had 2 problems- the impeller and the shifter. The shifter worked OK last Fall.

Sorry for the confusion. Your information is still useful. Thanks.
