Gear oil Leaking from speedo hole

Went to the lake today after motoring about half mile we stopped to fish and saw oil in the water. Used trolling motor back to ramp and when got the boat out of the water gear oil was dripping from the speedo hole on my 1986HP Evinrude. Before going out I cleaned the wood from this hole with a piece of small stiff wire as my speedo was not working last year. Any Ideas?:mad:
 
Have the g/c pressure/vacuum checked. If it's leaking there the g/c will have to come off. When OMC drilled that passage they put a plug in the upper part of the g/c and that may be bad.
 
It is MODEL # E150STLCRD and is original as far as I know. Can I just seal with self tapping screws in the speedo holes? The small intake down low and where the plastic tube comes out to go up to the upper end
dont need it anyhow
 
I just looked up the g/c for your model # and it doesn't show the speedo pick up. I still think it's not the orginial g/c but do what you have to. Good Luck.

Original I am not sure about just assumed it was. I also looked it up and the only mention or speedo was one part. It shows it at that top position I mentioned where it comes out to go to the upper end.

At what pressure are lower units pressure tested?
 
model # E150STLCRD and title makes it a 1984. Not a lot of water in oil. I think I caught it early. I have now put a threaded plug in the top speedo port
 
Like I said before I cleaned the small intake out with a peice of very stiff wire (like a bike spoke)and no oil at that time. Could i have put a hole though?
 
Can it be pressure tested without removing lower end? Also is it ok to use Mercury high profomance lower end oil in this unit? That Iis what is avaliable localy
