Gear oil in bilge

"I have a 1995 larson with a mercruiser with the 5.7 chev block. I've been having to fill the lower unit revoir occasionally and noticed the fluid in the bilge. I took it in last October to be repaired and was told it would be done in mid November and it sat in their yard full of snow all winter, which had me boiling to say the least. I called this spring and was told they replaced the valve cover gaskets and pressure tested the lower unit and it was ok.

At this point I just want to get the boat and go fishing this weekend, but I'm pretty sure it will still have a leak somewhere because it did before and they didn't change anything.

I've read posts about the hoses possibly leaking or mid seals leaking. Where does the grease go.....it leaves the resevoir via the hose and goes where. I've looked with a light but it's hard to see. They probably did test the lower unit and found it to be ok but with grease in the bilge it has to be leaking upstream somewhere. I had the bellows and bearing replaced two years ago.

Thanks - Dan"

Thanks for the picture and excuse my ignorance but on which diagram is the vent screw hole on the outdrive located in the group of diagrams that are listed?

My reservoir bottle was actually the square bottle which was also shown.

Thanks - Dan

Thanks Guy. I'm assuming that the fluid must just gravity flow to the outdrive and then keep it full??? So any leak into the bilge would be a simple leak in the line versus any kind of a seal??

To pressure test the lower unit I assume you must have to plug the vent hole.

Thanks again - Dan

The problem could also be a leaking input seal in the outdrive causing it to slowly fill up the bellows with gear oil and leak into the boat. If you find no leaks on the hose between your reservoir and the transom I would look there.

"Not to butt in, but I was having trouble with gear lube getting into my bilge, and it turned out to be a mi9ssing gasket on the reservoir filler cap"
