Drained gear oil and it appeared to have maybe a 90w? typical auto gear oil vs a marine gear oil I use in my 1980's Johnsons.Service manual I have does not specify weight. What typically was used in these vintage motors.?thanks

Actually, in 1969, they specified OMC Type C in all their motors, because that is what they made. BUT, in later years, they came out with Hi Vis oil and specified that in all their non-electric shift motors, present and prior. Also, prior to producing Type C, 90W Hypoid oil was specified in the same gearcase. I guess the point is, it is not critical in that old gearcase design. Hypoid, 80-90 gearcase lube, Hi-Vis, any of them will be fine.

Compared to some new motors today these gears are very rugged ( same as the 40 HP of 1960's ) so just use outboard gear oil.

I have used Mercury-high performance gear lube for some time in my Mercury, and because of that i have only that oil in my home. So i filled my old Evinrude Lightwin`s gear-case with that oil, and seems working nice. Anyway i like to use oil, that protect gear-case even if there is some drops salt water in the gear-case.
