Gear oil check reservoir is it necessary, new (used) Bell housing doesn't have hose

I'm replacing the bell housing with a new (used) one that I got off eBay. The one I hl bought doesn't have the house for the oil reservoir. Where you connects (the hose that passes they l through the transom and to the reservoir) just has a brass plug in it that looks standard and there is no hose going through the housing to the lower unit (there is a hole for the valve but you has not been machined out). This all looks standard. On my boat however there is the oil reservoir and my lower unit has the ball valve where you where the check valve would (if it existed) interesect.

Is there anything I need to do so as to not use the reservoir? Do I need to do anything with the ball valve on the lower unit. Any help is appreciated.

if you have the res now it can be added. remove the brass fitting from your old housing, remove the plug from the new housing and install the fitting. The hose does not go thru the housing, a "dribble valve" is simply pushed into place.

Thanks for the reply! I have the check valve (like you show in the picture) but it's the ports and hose on and inside the bell housing that I don't have. There is a hose that comes out of the bell housing on the transom side that doesn't exist on the new one. There is also an internal hose in the bell housing that doesn't exist (connects the oil resevoir between the transon side of the bell housing and the lower unit side of the bell housing. Additionally where that check babe is inserted into the bell housing there is a hole that exists but it doesn't go anywhere (its just a blind hole).

If you have a plug in the new housing remove it d you will see daylight thru the housing,

Yeah so that hose number 18 is what I'm missing I'm pretty sure. Is the reservoir necessary cause I'd really not like to install it all if it's a pain and means removing the bellows and all of that...

that not the bell housing , thats a transom assembly Remove the plug and check to see is it does go thru. If yes you need the transfer fitting

Great find on that diagram, thanks! Based on that it was never installed on the transom ardently that I'm currently trying to install. I would rather not take off the bell housing to install it. So if I don't do it, is that a big problem, and do I need to do anything to the lower unit (as in if it a problem that is l it has the ball valve on the lower unit where the bell housing mates). This is the first sterndruve I've worked on so I don't have a comparison.

Yeah I did, everything looks identical except missing this hose (so it's just capped) and the lower bolts that clamp through the transom to the transom plate has through holes instead of blind tapped holes so I'm installing the anode bolts there, it also had the mercathode device and do I'm putting the anode block there as well.
