Bought a used 1987 15hp and I'm changing the gear lube. I have 7/8 quarts of auto gear lube....MOBIL 1 SUPER SYN 75W-140, VALVOLINE 80W-90, VAL 85W-140, CASTROL HYPOY C 80W90, LUBRIGUARD 85W-140.
Can I use any of these? Why buy MORE gear lube if I ca se these and get the SAME results?

You could use any of the 80W-90 lubes. But watch for water intrusion because the auto lubes may or may not be formulated to cope with water.

You should have seen the gear lube that came out of it...….BLACKKKKKK. No doubt, the OEM lube. I rebuilt the carb, fuel pump, water pump, new hoses etc.
Like a new motor now.
I'll use the Valvoline 80w-90 it basically says it will work in anything.

I have used ordinary 80W90 lube in my lower unit and it works just fine.
No leaks, no water intrusion.
That being said - I am sure to drain it out and then refill it at the end of each season, so that it sleeps all winter with fresh oil in it.
Any water left in there over the winter would not be good, it could freeze and break things.
