"Dear Members,

I'm new to boating, and this forum. Have aquired a 2nd hand boat recently, fittet out with a 150Hp Evinrude motor (Model not yet known)
The gear lube lower drain plug had a leak (cracked gasket), and an unknown qty of oil was lost, so I obviously have to top up again.

My question relates to the grade of gear lube oil.
In the area where I live, special marine grade gear lube oil is rather hard to come by, and extremely expensive too. (We are talking approx $9.00 USD for a mere 10 Fl Oz.)
A local boat dealer advised me that ordinary gear oil grade EP90 would be an acceptable alternative. The slightly more expensive synthetic variant ATW90 was also given as an option.

What are your thoughts on the above advice, and do you concur therewith. Which alternative common oil grade would you recommend where the special boat gear lube isn't freely available ?
(I understand that one must never mix a mineral and synthetic oil. I presume the original gear oil is synthetic based, but don't know for sure)

Your assistance will be highly appreciated

Kind Regards"

"The normal oil is a 75W90 or 80W90 oil to API GL-4 or GL-5 Specification. An EP oil is not actually needed.

We are told those sold for outboard gear boxes have an improved corrosion inhibitor package for protection in the event of water ingress.

I am told that automotive oils foam too much (I did not say i believed it though)

You will have to drain the box because if oil has been lost via a bad seal on the drain plug you will almost certainly have got water in there. New seals on both plugs every time you change the oil is recommended. The choice of mineral or synthetic is yours so make.

I trust you know the method of filling is with a pump or a sqeeezy bottle via the drain hole until it flows from the level hole.

I use an EP90 automotive oil but in a much smaller engine used as as an auxiliary on a small sailing boat. When thats all gone I'll use some EP80 as I have quite a bit of that with no other use for it.

(Just point, some engines with a hydraulically assisted electric shift .. I forget what it's called, use a special oil known as type C)"

"that would be for electric shifts,...and what u r referring to--HYDRO-ELECTRIC lower units."
