Gear lube leaking 2005 4.3L

Hello. I have a 2005 Crownline with 4.3 alpha 1. I winterized it and found no water in the gear lube. Now after winter I notice gear lube leaking out of a weep hole on the upper right (starboard) side. The hole is toward the front of the drive. I also noticed the lube resivoir is pretty low but not empty, still about 3/4 of an inch of lube. I don't understand why it is leaking. I had no problems last year at all and as I said there is no water in the lower unit. The impeller was not replaced nor was any work on the lower unit performed. Please help. Spring is here and it is about time to go boating. Thanks, Ray

Ayuh,... So a seal went bad over winter,... It happens....

Find which seal, 'n replace it,...
Or,...
Pull the drive, 'n have the whole unit resealed....

do a pressure test and pay attention to the shift shaft bushing. Wiggle the shaft.

When you replace the impeller replace the bushing.

I have pulled the lower unit. I passes a pressure test. The oil appears to be leaking around and down the drive shaft from the upper drive shaft seal. I have even ran this boat on the lake and no water entered the lower unit. However, when I returned it to the garage, after a couple days I noticed it leaked again. The oil is leaking from the upper drain hole on the lower unit near the water pump housing. I may just run the boat this way adding a little oil now and then and monitor it.

Thanks, Ray
